iPad charging problems are usually caused by one of a handful of issues — most of which you can diagnose at home before bringing it in. Here's the complete guide.
Identify Your iPad's Charging Port
- Lightning — oval connector, older iPad (up to 9th gen), iPad mini 5th gen
- USB-C — rectangular connector, iPad Pro (2018+), iPad Air 4th gen+, iPad mini 6th gen, iPad 10th gen
- MagSafe — only on iPad Pro M4 (2024)
The fixes below apply to all, but port-specific issues differ.
Quick Fixes to Try First
- Clean the port — lint is the #1 cause. Use a dry toothpick to remove debris from the Lightning or USB-C port. Be gentle.
- Try a different cable and adapter — cable failure is extremely common. Test with a known-working Apple cable.
- Hard restart the iPad — hold Top button + Volume Down (or Home button on older iPads) until the Apple logo appears.
- Check the charger wattage — the iPad Pro 12.9" needs a 30W+ charger to charge at full speed. A 5W phone charger will charge it very slowly or not at all under use.
Port Damage
- Signs of port damage:
- Cable fits loosely or at an angle
- Bent or missing pins inside the port
- Corrosion or discolouration visible
- Works with some cables but not others
