MacBooks are expensive, well-built machines — but they're not immune to hardware failure. The problem is that most people ignore early warning signs until a minor issue becomes a major (and expensive) one. After repairing 5,000+ MacBooks in Mumbai, here are the five signs we see most often that people should have acted on sooner.
1. The MacBook Is Getting Unusually Hot
MacBooks run warm, but there's a difference between warm and worrying. If your MacBook is hot to the touch on the keyboard or bottom panel, the fan is running constantly at high speed, or your lap feels like a heating pad after 30 minutes — something is wrong.
- *Why it matters:** Excessive heat is usually caused by a failing thermal paste on the CPU/GPU, a blocked heatsink, a malfunctioning fan, or a software process consuming 100% CPU. Left unaddressed, heat is the single biggest cause of solder joint fatigue and long-term logic board failure.
- *What to do:** Check Activity Monitor first — if no runaway process is obvious, bring it in for diagnosis. A thermal paste reapplication costs ₹1,500–3,000 and can extend the MacBook's life by years.
2. The Battery Drains to 0% in Under 2 Hours
Apple's MacBook batteries are rated for 1,000 charge cycles, but real-world use in Mumbai's heat often degrades them faster. If you're going from 100% to dead in under 2 hours from a full charge — or the battery percentage jumps erratically — it needs replacement.
- *How to check:** Hold Option and click the battery icon in the menu bar. If it says "Service Battery" or "Replace Soon," don't delay. Also check System Information → Power → Cycle Count.
- *Why it matters:** A degraded lithium battery can swell (caused by off-gassing), which pushes up the trackpad and, in severe cases, cracks the display. We've seen batteries swell so much they warp the chassis. Catching this early saves your trackpad and screen.
- *Cost:** Battery replacement at Mac Repair Center is ₹4,500–7,500 depending on model, with a 90-day warranty.
3. Random Shutdowns or Failure to Boot
If your MacBook shuts off without warning — especially under load — or doesn't turn on consistently, this is a serious red flag. These symptoms point to:
- A power management issue on the logic board
- A failing or shorted battery
- Corrupted system firmware
- A failing SSD
- *Don't just reinstall macOS.** A software reinstall fixes corrupted OS files, but it won't fix hardware faults. If the problem persists after reinstallation, it's hardware — and delaying repair almost always makes it worse and more expensive.
- *What to do:** Bring it in immediately. We offer free diagnosis.
4. Keyboard Keys Are Sticking, Missing, or Unresponsive
MacBook keyboards — particularly the butterfly mechanism models (2016–2019) — are notoriously fragile. A single dust particle under a key can make it unresponsive or register double presses. If multiple keys are affected, or the spacebar is unreliable, it's time for a professional keyboard replacement.
- *Why it matters:** MacBook keyboards on affected models often have the entire top case (keyboard + battery + trackpad) replaced as one assembly, since Apple designed them to be inseparable. This is a ₹6,000–14,000 repair depending on model.
- *Pro tip:** If you have a 2016–2019 MacBook Pro with butterfly keyboard, ask us about our refurbished top case options — it can save you ₹3,000–5,000.
5. The Display Has Dark Spots, Flickering, or 'Flexgate' Lines
Screen problems are hard to ignore, but many people use external monitors and put off the repair indefinitely. Don't. Screen problems usually worsen over time.
- *Flexgate (2016–2019 MacBook Pro):** A design flaw where the backlight flex cable fatigues from repeated opening/closing. Early symptom: a dim strip at the bottom of the screen. Late symptom: no backlight at all.
- *Delamination:** Older Retina displays sometimes develop bubbling between the glass and the LCD panel. This is cosmetic initially but worsens.
- *Dark spots or dead pixels:** Usually caused by pressure damage or water ingress. These expand over time.
- *Cost:** Screen replacement at Mac Repair Center is ₹8,000–18,000 depending on model. We use OEM-quality panels with 90-day warranty.
When to Come In Immediately (Not Tomorrow)
If your MacBook has been exposed to liquid — any liquid — stop using it immediately, power it off, and bring it in the same day. Water damage is time-sensitive. The longer liquid sits on the board, the more corrosion forms, and the harder (and more expensive) the recovery becomes.
