You've just spilled liquid on your MacBook. The next 60 seconds — and the next few hours — will determine whether your MacBook survives and whether your data is recoverable. Here's exactly what to do.
The First 60 Seconds: Critical Actions
- *Do this immediately, in this order:**
- Power off NOW — don't save your work, don't wait for a proper shutdown. Hold the power button until the MacBook turns off. Every second of operation while liquid is on the board risks short-circuiting components.
- Close the lid — this prevents liquid from draining further into the keyboard and display area.
- Disconnect MagSafe/USB-C charger — if it's connected, unplug it immediately. A powered connection accelerates corrosion and increases the risk of shorts.
- Turn it upside down — gently invert the MacBook so any remaining liquid drains out through the keyboard rather than further into the chassis.
- Remove external accessories — unplug anything connected to ports.
What NOT to Do
These common "remedies" are myths that make things worse:
- *❌ Don't put it in rice**
- Rice does not absorb moisture from circuit boards. This myth persists but has been thoroughly debunked. Rice delays you getting proper help while corrosion progresses.
- *❌ Don't use a hair dryer**
- Heat can warp components, push liquid deeper into crevices, and accelerate corrosion on metallic contacts.
- *❌ Don't turn it on to "test if it still works"**
- This is the most common mistake we see. Powering on a wet board actively shorts circuits and turns a potentially-repairable board into an unrepairable one.
- *❌ Don't wait and see**
- Corrosion begins within hours of water contact. What might cost ₹5,000 to fix today could cost ₹15,000 or become unrecoverable after a week.
In the Next Few Hours: Get It to a Repair Centre
After the first 60 seconds, the clock is ticking on corrosion. Here's what to do next:
- Don't let it "air dry" — air drying lets water evaporate but leaves conductive mineral deposits (from tap water or drinks) on the board. These cause short circuits when power is applied later.
- Bring it to Mac Repair Center within 24 hours — the sooner we get it, the better the outcome. We offer free initial assessment for water damage.
- Call or WhatsApp us first — we can advise on any immediate steps and have a technician ready when you arrive. +91 77000 44192
- *Availability:** Our Kandivali West workshop is open Mon–Sat, 10am–8pm. If you're outside these hours, WhatsApp us — we'll advise on the safest storage method until we can see it.
What We Do With a Water-Damaged MacBook
When a water-damaged MacBook comes in:
- Ultrasonic cleaning — the board is cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner and specialised PCB cleaning solution to remove all mineral deposits and oxidation.
- Visual inspection under microscope — we identify every component affected by corrosion or shorting.
- Power rail testing — we test each power rail before applying any voltage to the board.
- Component-level repair — corroded or shorted components are replaced as needed.
- Data priority — if data recovery is urgent, we prioritise storage access before full board repair.
Our water damage success rate is over 85% for machines brought in within 48 hours. After 72+ hours, the success rate drops significantly.
- *Cost:** Water damage assessment and repair: ₹4,500–14,000 depending on extent of damage. Data recovery (if needed): from ₹5,000. No fix, no fee on data recovery.
What About the MacBook's Water Resistance Rating?
MacBooks are NOT water resistant. Unlike iPhones (which have IP67/IP68 ratings), MacBooks have no official ingress protection rating.
Apple includes a liquid indicator inside MacBooks that turns red on contact with water — and water damage is explicitly excluded from Apple's warranty and AppleCare+.
The bottom line: there is no safety net for MacBook water damage. Act immediately and get it to a professional repair centre as fast as possible.
