How to Back Up Your MacBook Before Sending It for Repair

Before any repair, backing up your MacBook protects against data loss from the unexpected. Even for simple screen or battery replacements, we always recommend a backup. Here's how to do it properly.

Time Machine creates a complete backup of everything on your Mac — apps, files, settings, and system data.

• Connect an external drive (at least as large as your Mac's storage)
• System Settings → General → Time Machine
• Click "Add Backup Disk" and select your external drive
• Click "Back Up Now"

First backup: 1–4 hours depending on storage size. Subsequent backups: 5–15 minutes (only backs up changes).

iCloud automatically syncs Documents, Desktop, Photos, and Contacts if enabled.

System Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → iCloud Drive → turn on. Enable Photos → iCloud Photos.

Check iCloud storage: 5GB free is rarely enough. Upgrade to 50GB (₹75/month) or 200GB (₹219/month) before a repair.

• For important files only — copy to an external drive or USB:
• Documents folder
• Desktop folder
• Downloads folder
• Pictures/Photos library
• Any project folders

This takes 15–30 minutes for most users and covers the essentials.

Before dropping off your MacBook:

• Backup complete (Time Machine or manual)
• Note your Apple ID password — you may need it after repair
• Note your macOS login password
• Disable FileVault encryption if possible (System Settings → Privacy & Security → FileVault) — makes repair easier and faster
• Sign out of iMessage if your display is being replaced (prevents issues with message sync)
• Remove any external accessories
