iPhone Face ID Not Working: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

April 8, 2026·6 min read

Face ID failures are frustrating — your phone becomes effectively a brick if you can't remember your passcode. Before you assume the worst (and before you pay for a repair that isn't needed), work through this complete troubleshooting guide. We'll cover every possible cause, from the trivial to the serious.

Quick Fixes to Try First (0 Cost)

Before anything else, try these:

  • Clean the TrueDepth camera — the notch area at the top of your iPhone. A smudge or screen protector covering the camera can block Face ID. Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth.
  • Restart your iPhone — a soft restart fixes many temporary Face ID glitches. Press and hold Side + Volume Down until the power slider appears.
  • Check Face ID settings — Settings → Face ID & Passcode. Make sure "iPhone Unlock" is toggled on. If Face ID isn't listed or shows an error, proceed to the next steps.
  • Check if you're wearing a mask or sunglasses — Face ID can struggle with sunglasses that block infrared light. If you use Face ID with a mask, you need iPhone 12 or later and iOS 15.4+.

Reset and Re-enrol Face ID

If the quick fixes don't work:

  • Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode
  • Tap "Reset Face ID"
  • Re-enrol by tapping "Set Up Face ID" and following the prompts
  • Re-enrol a second face if needed (alternate appearance)

This fixes many software-level Face ID failures, particularly after iOS updates that sometimes corrupt biometric data.

After a Screen Replacement: The Most Common Cause

If Face ID stopped working after a screen replacement, the fix depends on what happened:

  • *Scenario A: Low-quality third-party screen was installed**
  • Some cheap aftermarket screens include a digitiser that interferes with Face ID. Solution: replace the screen with an OEM-quality panel.
  • *Scenario B: The Face ID cable was damaged during repair**
  • The TrueDepth sensor array (dot projector, infrared camera, flood illuminator) is connected via a delicate flex cable in the top of the iPhone. If a careless repair bends or tears this cable, Face ID dies.
  • *Scenario C: Screen replacement bypassed proprietary pairing**
  • On iPhone 12 and later, Apple has paired the screen to the phone via a serialisation chip. Some repairs don't properly transfer this pairing. Only Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider can restore full display functionality in this case.

Important: if a third-party shop's screen replacement killed your Face ID, bring it to us. We may be able to recover Face ID without another screen replacement.

After a Drop: Hardware Damage

If Face ID stopped working after you dropped your iPhone, one or more TrueDepth components have likely been damaged:

  • Dot projector — projects 30,000 infrared dots to map your face. If the VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) chip inside is cracked, Face ID fails entirely.
  • Infrared camera — reads the dot pattern reflected off your face. Damage here also kills Face ID.
  • Flood illuminator — provides infrared illumination in the dark. Damage here usually still allows Face ID in bright light.

Some of these components can be repaired at component level. Apple replaces the entire Face ID module — we attempt component-level repair where possible.

  • *Cost at Mac Repair Center:** ₹4,000–8,000 depending on which component has failed.

After Water Damage

Liquid ingress can short-circuit the TrueDepth sensor assembly. The good news: if you bring the iPhone in quickly, corrosion may not yet have set in and a full clean + board repair can restore Face ID.

The bad news: if corrosion has progressed, the sensor cable or sensor chips may need replacement.

  • *Act fast** — every hour counts with water damage.

When Face ID Simply Cannot Be Repaired

On iPhone 12 and later, Apple cryptographically pairs the Face ID module to the logic board. This means:

  • A replacement Face ID module from another iPhone will not work without Apple's proprietary software tool
  • Even Apple replaces the entire logic board in many Face ID repair scenarios

If you have an iPhone 12–16 with a failed Face ID sensor, our options are limited by Apple's pairing restrictions. We'll always tell you upfront what's possible and what isn't.
