MacBook keyboard issues range from a single stuck key to a completely unresponsive keyboard. The fix depends heavily on which MacBook model you have — particularly whether it has the butterfly or scissor keyboard.
First: Identify Your Keyboard Type
- *Butterfly keyboard (2016–2019 MacBook Pro, 2018–2019 MacBook Air):** Ultra-thin mechanism, prone to failure from a single dust particle. Known Apple quality issue.
- *Scissor/Magic Keyboard (all M-series, MacBook Pro 2020+, MacBook Air 2020+):** Reliable mechanism. Issues are less common and usually software or connector-related.
Software Fixes (Try These First)
- Restart your MacBook — fixes many temporary keyboard glitches.
- Reset NVRAM — Restart, hold Option+Command+P+R until you hear the startup sound twice. Releases many stuck key states.
- Reset SMC — See MacBook Not Charging article for SMC reset instructions.
- Check Accessibility settings — Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard. Make sure Slow Keys and Sticky Keys are off — these change how key presses are registered.
- Check for stuck modifier keys — press each of Shift, Option, Command, Control twice. Sometimes they get "stuck" in the OS.
Butterfly Keyboard: The Specific Fix
For 2016–2019 MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard issues:
- *Single key not working:** Turn MacBook upside down and blow compressed air in short bursts at a 75° angle. Rotate 90° and repeat. Apple's official recommendation for butterfly keyboards.
- *Multiple keys or spacebar:** This usually needs hardware repair. On butterfly keyboard models, individual keys can sometimes be replaced, but Apple's design makes it very difficult. The common fix is top case replacement (keyboard, trackpad, and battery as one unit).
When You Need Top Case Replacement
If multiple keys don't work, keys register double presses, or the keyboard is completely dead despite software fixes, top case replacement is required.
On butterfly keyboard MacBooks (2016–2019), this is the standard fix because the keyboard, battery, and trackpad are one bonded assembly.
