MacBook Not Charging? Here's Why and How to Fix It

Your MacBook plugged in but showing no charging indicator. Before panicking, work through this checklist — most charging issues have a simple fix.

Try a different USB-C cable and charger. Apple's own cables are known to fray and fail. A faulty cable is the most common cause of charging issues. Test with a known-working cable from another MacBook or a quality third-party USB-C PD charger.

Also try different USB-C ports on the MacBook — if one port charges and another doesn't, the non-charging port has a fault.

The System Management Controller (SMC) manages power functions. A corrupted SMC can cause charging to stop.

• *Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3):** Shut down → wait 30 seconds → start up. The SMC resets automatically.

• *Intel Macs:** Shut down → hold Shift+Control+Option+Power for 10 seconds → release → start up normally.

USB-C ports collect lint and debris that physically block the connector. Use a dry wooden or plastic toothpick to gently clear the port — never metal. A compressed air blast also works.

If the port looks damaged, corroded, or has bent pins, it needs professional repair.

Hold Option → click battery icon → if it says "Battery Not Charging" or "No Power Source", the issue is confirmed hardware. If it says "Power Source: Adapter" but percentage isn't rising, the adapter may be too low wattage (a 30W charger won't charge a MacBook Pro 16" under load).

If none of the above work, you have a hardware fault — most commonly:

• USB-C controller chip failure (CD3215/CD3217) — the most common Mac charging fault. Repairable at chip level for ₹5,000–9,000.
• Dead battery — if the MacBook works on power but won't charge or run on battery alone.
• Corroded charging port — from liquid ingress. Needs board-level cleaning.
