MacBook Screen Flickering? What It Means and What to Do

April 8, 2026·5 min read

Screen flickering on a MacBook can range from a minor annoyance to a serious warning sign of impending display failure. The right fix depends entirely on the cause — and there are half a dozen different causes we see regularly. Here's how to diagnose and fix each one.

Start With a Software Check

Before assuming hardware failure, rule out software causes:

  • *1. Disable Auto-Brightness**
  • System Settings → Displays → uncheck "Automatically adjust brightness."
  • Auto-brightness can sometimes cause visible flickering as it adjusts, especially on older machines.
  • *2. Disable True Tone (if available)**
  • System Settings → Displays → uncheck True Tone. True Tone adjusts colour temperature dynamically and occasionally causes visible shifts that look like flickering.
  • *3. Check for GPU driver issues**
  • System Settings → Battery → Energy Mode. On Intel MacBooks with dedicated GPUs, switching between "Better Battery" and "Better Performance" can trigger flickering. Try forcing "High Power" mode.
  • *4. Update macOS**
  • Some macOS versions have known display bugs that cause flickering on specific models. Check for updates.

Flexgate: The Most Common MacBook Pro Screen Issue

Flexgate affects MacBook Pro models from 2016–2019 (specifically A1706, A1707, A1708, A1989, A1990).

  • *What it is:** Apple's design for these models routes the backlight flex cable under the hinge. Every time you open and close the lid, the cable bends slightly. Over time (typically 2–4 years), the cable fatigues and cracks.
  • *Early symptoms:** A dim or dark strip along the bottom of the screen — typically 1–2 cm wide — when the lid is opened past a certain angle. The strip disappears when the lid is tilted back further.
  • *Late symptoms:** No backlight at all (the screen appears black but you can faintly see the image with a torch).
  • *Fix:** The flex cable needs to be replaced. On these models, it's part of the display assembly. Cost at Mac Repair Center: ₹8,000–14,000 depending on model. Apple's fix is a full display replacement at ₹35,000–55,000.

GPU Failure (Intel MacBooks)

On Intel MacBooks — particularly the 2011–2013 MacBook Pros with AMD discrete GPUs — flickering can indicate GPU failure. Symptoms:

  • Flickering or horizontal lines, especially under heavy graphics load
  • The flickering stops when using only integrated graphics
  • macOS may crash with a kernel panic when flickering occurs

This is a serious fault. The GPU solder connections have failed. In most cases, this is repairable at chip level (reflow soldering), but it requires specialist equipment.

Note: 2011 MacBook Pros have a well-documented GPU issue that Apple ran a repair programme for — but that programme has ended. We can still repair these.

Display Cable Damage

On MacBook models that have been dropped or had repair work done, the LCD flex cable can be damaged. This causes intermittent flickering that worsens as the cable is moved.

Diagnosis: if the flickering gets worse when you wiggle the screen slightly, or appears/disappears as you adjust the lid angle, a damaged cable is likely.

Fix: Cable replacement, or if the damage is at the logic board connector, connector-level soldering. Cost: ₹4,000–10,000 depending on the model and extent of damage.

External Monitor Test: A Useful Diagnostic

Connect your MacBook to an external display (via HDMI, USB-C, or Thunderbolt).

  • If the external display is fine and the built-in screen still flickers: The fault is in the built-in display, cable, or hinge area.
  • If both screens flicker: The fault is likely in the GPU or logic board.

This simple test narrows down the fault location before you bring it in for diagnosis.

When to Bring It In

  • Bring your MacBook to Mac Repair Center if:
  • Flickering is getting progressively worse
  • You see a dark strip at the bottom of the screen (Flexgate)
  • The screen goes black but the MacBook is still running
  • Flickering persists after all software fixes
