iPhone not charging is frustrating — especially when you don't know whether it's the cable, the phone, or something more serious. Here's every cause and fix, in order of likelihood.
1. Dirty or Blocked Lightning/USB-C Port (Most Common)
The charging port on iPhones collects lint from pockets. If the cable wiggles loosely or doesn't click in firmly, lint is blocking the connection.
Fix: Use a wooden or plastic toothpick to gently scrape lint from the port. Never use metal. After cleaning, the cable should click in firmly and charging should resume.
This fixes approximately 40% of "not charging" complaints.
2. Faulty Cable or Adapter
Try a different cable and adapter. If it charges with a different cable, your original cable is dead. Apple Lightning cables are particularly prone to fraying near the connector.
If using third-party accessories: ensure they're MFi-certified (for Lightning) or USB-C PD compliant. Cheap cables often fail silently.
3. Soft Restart
- A software bug can cause the charging system to stop responding. Force restart your iPhone:
- iPhone 8 and later: press Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold Side button until Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7: hold Volume Down + Side button.
- iPhone 6s: hold Home + Sleep/Wake button.
4. Damaged Charging Port
If the port looks bent, has corrosion marks, or the cable wobbles even after cleaning, the port itself is damaged. Lightning port repair at Mac Repair Center: ₹1,500–2,000. USB-C port (iPhone 15+): ₹2,000–3,000. Takes 30 minutes.
5. Water Damage to Charging Circuit
If your iPhone got wet recently, liquid may have reached the charging circuit. Corrosion on the board can block charging. Bring it in — ultrasonic cleaning and board repair recovers most water-damaged iPhones.
6. Battery Failure
A completely dead or deeply discharged battery can appear as "not charging" — the phone shows nothing on screen. Leave it connected for 30+ minutes. If still nothing, the battery may need replacement.
7. Charging IC Failure
On rare occasions, the charging integrated circuit on the logic board fails. Symptoms: no charging with any cable, any adapter, on any port. This requires board-level repair (₹3,000–6,000).
